Active phase separation by turning towards regions of higher density

چکیده

Studies of active matter, from molecular assemblies to animal groups, have revealed two broad classes behavior: a tendency align yields orientational order and collective motion, whereas particle repulsion leads self-trapping motility-induced phase separation. Here, we report third class interactions that produce Combining theory experiments on self-propelled Janus colloids, show stronger the rear than front these particles produces non-reciprocal torques reorient motion toward high-density regions. Particles thus self-propel crowded areas, which Clusters remain fluid exhibit fast turnover, in contrast jammed clusters typically arise self-trapping, interfaces are sufficiently wide they span entire clusters. Overall, our work identifies torque-based mechanism for separation fluids, predicts yield coexisting phases lack internal order.

Texturising by phase separation.

The most common food processing operations, thermal and mechanical treatments, both affect phase state and texture of foods. The phase separation threshold for food biopolymer mixtures is usually below their concentrations characteristically found in food. Phase-separation underpins texturisation processes during food processing and digestion. The distribution of water between the phases, the a...

Hydrodynamic suppression of phase separation in active suspensions.

We simulate with hydrodynamics a suspension of active disks squirming through a Newtonian fluid. We explore numerically the full range of squirmer area fractions from dilute to close packed and show that "motility induced phase separation," which was recently proposed to arise generically in active matter, and which has been seen in simulations of active Brownian disks, is strongly suppressed b...

Continuum theory of phase separation kinetics for active Brownian particles.

Active Brownian particles (ABPs), when subject to purely repulsive interactions, are known to undergo activity-induced phase separation broadly resembling an equilibrium (attraction-induced) gas-liquid coexistence. Here we present an accurate continuum theory for the dynamics of phase-separating ABPs, derived by direct coarse graining, capturing leading-order density gradient terms alongside an...
